Research Assistants

Voima

Company Description

Voima is a healthcare startup focused on proactive, personalized support for people living with chronic conditions, starting with sickle cell disease. Through advocacy, education, research, and AI-driven tools, Voima empowers patients and caregivers to better understand and manage their health. The organization develops insights and resources that make chronic care more preventive, accessible, and human-centered. Team members collaborate across disciplines to build solutions that address both medical and everyday challenges of chronic illness. Voima is driven by a mission to transform long-term care and improve quality of life for diverse patient communities. These research projects support that mission directly, building the broader evidence base Voima draws on for digital health and AI-driven chronic care across the region.

Help generate evidence to shape the future of digital health in Sub-Saharan Africa.

We’re looking for motivated Research Assistants to join a series of systematic review and evidence synthesis projects focused on digital health across Sub-Saharan Africa. If you’re passionate about research, global health, AI, or healthcare innovation, this is an opportunity to gain hands-on research experience while contributing to publishable work.

Compensation: This is an unpaid research collaboration. In place of a salary, contributors are recognized as co-authors on the resulting manuscript(s), in accordance with standard authorship guidelines.

Current Projects

* Machine learning for chronic disease risk prediction in Sub-Saharan Africa (approx. 8 weeks)

* Cost-effectiveness of mobile health (mHealth) interventions in Sub-Saharan Africa (approx. 9 weeks, includes a formal quality-appraisal stage)

Each project has a few clearly defined roles open:

✅ Co-Reviewer — helps search and screen the literature

✅ Data Charting Lead — extracts and organizes the data

✅ Data Analyst — turns the data into patterns and figures

✅ Writer — turns the analysis into the manuscript

What You’ll Do

* Screen scientific articles for eligibility.

* Extract and organize research data.

* Assist with evidence synthesis and analysis.

* Contribute to manuscript writing and editing.

* Participate in weekly research meetings and discussions.

What We’re Looking For

* Interest in digital health, public health, AI, medicine, or related fields.

* Strong attention to detail and critical thinking skills.

* Ability to read and synthesize scientific literature.

* Good written communication skills.

* Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

* Previous experience with systematic reviews or evidence synthesis.

* Experience with research writing or academic publications.

* Familiarity with databases such as PubMed, Scopus, or Web of Science.

* Experience using reference management software (e.g., Zotero, EndNote, Mendeley).

Previous publication experience is a plus, but not required.

What You’ll Gain

* Hands-on experience conducting publishable research.

* Mentorship throughout the systematic review process.

* Experience with evidence synthesis methodologies.

* Opportunity to collaborate with researchers across multiple projects.

* Eligible contributors will be recognized as co-authors on resulting manuscripts in accordance with standard authorship guidelines.

How to Apply

Please email your resume to careers@voimainitiative.com. In your email, let us know:

* Which project interests you most (wearables, machine learning, or cost-effectiveness), and

* Which role sounds like the best fit for you (Co-Reviewer, Data Charting Lead, Data Analyst, or Writer), or if you’re not sure yet, just tell us a bit about what you’re good at and we’ll help you figure out where you fit.

Feel free to briefly mention any relevant experience, systematic reviews, literature reviews, research projects, publications, or related coursework, though this isn’t required. If you have any questions about the roles, include them in your email and we’ll get back to you.

Join us in generating evidence that can help shape the future of digital health in Sub-Saharan Africa.
