About the Role

The Data Annotator position is a detail-oriented, fully remote role focused on the accurate labeling and categorization of primarily text-based documents, with occasional image annotation. This position is suitable for professionals with prior experience in data annotation, particularly those who excel in maintaining high standards of accuracy and consistency. The role operates within a globally distributed team, supporting machine learning and data analysis initiatives, and includes responsibilities for quality assurance, reporting, and peer mentorship. The position offers flexible working hours, with structured expectations for daily progress updates and regular team engagement.

Key Responsibilities

• Accurately label and categorize large volumes of text documents and images, adhering to detailed annotation guidelines and project-specific requirements.
• Conduct thorough quality assurance (QA) reviews of annotated data, both self-produced and by peers, to ensure consistency, completeness, and adherence to established standards.
• Generate and maintain clear, concise progress and quality reports using Google Sheets, documenting daily activities and annotation metrics.
• Collaborate with a globally distributed annotation team, participating in bi-weekly team meetings and monthly company-wide town hall sessions to align on project goals and best practices.
• Mentor and provide training to new team members, sharing annotation techniques, workflow tips, and quality standards to foster team development.
• Identify and escalate ambiguous or problematic data cases, contributing to the refinement of annotation guidelines and workflows.
• Maintain strict confidentiality and data security protocols when handling sensitive or proprietary information.
• Proactively communicate with team leads and project managers regarding progress, challenges, and suggestions for process improvement.
• Stay updated on annotation tools, techniques, and industry best practices relevant to text and image data labeling.

Required Experience & Skills

• Demonstrated experience in data annotation, with a strong track record of accuracy and attention to detail in labeling text and images for machine learning or data analysis projects.
• Proficiency in using annotation platforms and tools, with the ability to quickly adapt to new software as required by project needs.
• Advanced skills in Google Sheets, including creating, updating, and sharing basic reports, as well as tracking annotation metrics and QA outcomes.
• Strong quality assurance abilities, including reviewing, validating, and providing constructive feedback on the work of peers.
• Excellent written communication skills in English, with the ability to document processes, report progress, and communicate effectively with a remote, multicultural team.
• Experience mentoring or training junior team members, with a collaborative and supportive approach to knowledge sharing.
• High degree of self-motivation, time management, and reliability in a fully remote, flexible work environment.
• Familiarity with data privacy and security best practices, especially when handling sensitive or confidential information.

Qualifications

• Prior experience (1-3 years) in a data annotation, data labeling, or similar role supporting machine learning or data analytics projects.
• Secondary education or higher; additional certifications in data annotation, data science, or related fields are advantageous.
• Experience working in remote, distributed teams across multiple time zones is highly valued.
• Demonstrated ability to follow complex instructions and adapt to evolving annotation guidelines.
