Remote work is here to stay.
But just because you’re working from home (or a riverfront in Ada) doesn’t mean it’s all chill and vibes.
Success in remote work hinges on more than just Wi-Fi.
It requires structure, discipline and the right setup.
After speaking to a few remote professionals and learning from my own experience managing remote teams, here are 5 must-haves for every remote worker:
1. A Reliable Laptop/Computer (Not Just a Fancy One)
Don’t get caught up in the aesthetics. You don’t need the latest MacBook unless your work demands it. You need speed, battery life, and durability. A machine that won’t freeze during a client call or crash during a deadline.
Durable laptops can last about 3- 5 years of consistent use before the battery before defects starts. All those glossy inspirational Instagram quotes with 2 vertical screens?
Scratch it, its not relevant
2. Noise-Canceling Headphones
This is a game-changer. Whether you live in a busy house or you’re working from a café, headphones with noise cancellation help you focus — and sound professional on calls.
Several high value noise-cancelling headphones exist on the market. Go online and pick a decent one.
Your ears (and your clients) will thank you.
3. Stable Internet + Backup Plan
Wi-Fi isn’t enough. You need stable Wi-Fi.
Especially in Ghana where internet connectivity by providers can be very poor. Effective remote work requires having additional backup to stay connected.
Remote work is built on trust, and disappearing mid-Zoom doesn’t inspire much of it.
4. Ergonomic Setup
You might be 25 now, but that back pain will find you.
Back pain is real and making arrangements for decent work station with ergonomic chairs comes with several benefits.
Reduces back pain
Makes you more efficient
Lowers friction on shoulders
Invest in a decent chair, an external keyboard, maybe a laptop stand.
Remote work doesn’t mean working from your bed 24/7 — your body will pay the price.
5. Task + Time Management Tool
From Notion to Trello to Google Calendar — find something that helps you plan, track, and stay on top of your tasks.
In remote work, no one’s hovering. You need to manage you.
Final Thoughts
Remote work is a blessing. But without the right setup, it can quickly become a nightmare.
These 5 items don’t guarantee success — but they set the foundation.
The rest? That’s up to your discipline and drive.
